This rare wooden bed, measuring 220 cm, is an exceptional piece from the Highlands of Madagascar. The Merina, Betsileo, and Tanala populations are known for their ancient and elaborate sculptural tradition, and wooden beds are its most emblematic expression.

The bed, due to its size and place in the house, indicated the social status of its owner. Located in the eastern part of the home, it was the most important piece of furniture. The artisans of the time sculpted only the external side of the horizontal part visible at the level of the bed base.
